FAQs

We are here to answer it all

WHAT IS HOPE BEHIND BARS?

We are a group of professionals and concerned citizens desirous of seeing a just and peaceful society with reduced crime rate. We are volunteer driven and we believe in the power of unified collective effort to make change happen.

WHY DO YOU DO WHAT YOU DO?

We are driven by our love for humanity and the belief that everyone can live optimally when presented with the right assistance and opportunity even a man or woman behind bars. Passion to see a developed, decongested correctional system in Africa further drives us.

WHO ARE YOUR MAJOR TARGETS?

Our Justice Access initiatives targets indigent awaiting trial inmates. We define indigent inmates as any woman or man who cannot afford 3 square meals outside prison. We also consider other factors based on how individual cases are presented. Our Collaborative Reformation initiatives targets children in trouble with the law housed at any of the 3 Borstal Training Institutions in Nigeria as well as women across female prison facilities.

I HAVE A POOR NEIGHBOUR WHO NEEDS A LAWYER, CAN YOU HELP HIM?

No. We only offer our services to indigent people within prison population who cannot afford quality legal representation.

Where is Hope Behind bars located?

We currently have our Headquarter Office in Abuja, Nigeria. However, our services are not restricted to where we have our physical location. We have volunteers in Abia, Delta, Niger and Ondo state and we have the approval of the appropriate authority to carry out probono legal services in the said states. We have successfully handled over 20 cases in Niger and Abia states alone within the past one year.

Where is ConnectLawyer?

It is our way of leveraging technology to achieve our vision. We collate and review the data of young lawyers interested in handling pro-bono cases, match them with mentors if necessary, assign cases to them and ensure that every case assigned to them is handled from start to finish with utmost diligence. It also helps indigent people within the prison population get access to quality legal representation by matching them with lawyers.
